A scant 10 days before Christmas, AOL laid off approximately 450 of its employees from the company’s Dulles, VA headquarters. AOL spokesman Andrew Weinstein told press that this latest round of layoffs represented the final round of job cuts begun last August. At that time, AOL shifted from its subscription-based ISP revenue model to that of an online-advertising revenue-based model.
This massive sea-change in corporate philosophy at AOL occurred because of the evolution of content provision on the Internet. In all 5,000 people have lost jobs at AOL, most of them as a result of AOL closing its American call centers in Ogden, UT; Albuquerque, NM; Tuscon, AZ; and in Oklahoma City, OK. That’s cool though. AOL’s Bangalore, India and Phillipines call centers are still open for your customer service convenience.
