Big Computing and Big Internet have teamed up to press the federal government to allow high-speed Internet access to consumers via TV airwaves. Perennial Internet rivals Microsoft and Google have joined up with Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Intel and Phillips to lobby Congress to free up idle television channels to be used to beam the Internet into homes and businesses.

Right now, these idle television channels are frequencies that are between the currently used television frequencies and act as buffers against bleed from those channels. Selling the idle channels, also known as white space, could represent an income source for the U.S. government, via an FCC sanctioned auction. The Washington Post has an excellent article detailing the proceedings.
