News Corp. is suing Sanford “King of Spam” Wallace for using automated software to create 11,000 fake profiles on its social networking website MySpace, in clear violation of that site’s Terms of Use agreement.
Wallace’s goal in building these dummy profiles is to direct MySpace users to sites like Real-Vegas-Sins.com. The MySpace suit seeks unspecified damages and accuses Wallace of violating the 2003 Can-Spam Act, a law that regulates unsolicited email.
Wallace is no stranger to conflict. After allegedly going straight in the late 1990’s, he developed spybot software which he unleashed upon unwary web surfers and infected their computers. He then sold them the “cure”, a software program he had written, for $30. He and associates were fined over four million dollars by the federal government for that offense.
